Expo Volunteers: Give and YOU will receive

Be one of the first to join the force of volunteers welcoming the world in 2020 Volunteering is not only about giving back to your community, it’s also about widening your network, gaining new skills and being part of something special. Between now and 2020, we will be recruiting more than 30,000 volunteers of all ages and nationalities to join us, as we welcome the world to Expo 2020. In this session you will hear from some veterans of the volunteering world about what it means to give your time and energy to volunteering. We will also be opening up registration for the Expo 2020 Volunteer Programme, giving you the opportunity to be one of the first to sign up and be part of this milestone project in our nation’s history.

Innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship

Everyone knows that Silicon Valley is a hotbed of innovation and creativity, but not everyone realises that its unique culture took more than 60 years to develop. In this workshop, you will explore the concepts of creativity, ideation and innovation and discover that it’s about more than ping pong tables and open plan offices. You will also learn more about why so many innovation efforts fail and what you can do to avoid it, discuss practical tips for accelerating innovation and explore the importance of collaboration. Anyone can call themselves an entrepreneur, but not everyone has entrepreneurial spirit. It’s a mindset, it’s an attitude, it’s an approach to thinking that actively seeks out change. In this workshop you will learn what it takes to be a creative entrepreneur, how to nurture your entrepreneurial spirit, and the actions required to turn your vision into reality.

Expo Energy: Unplugged

Space-based solar power is all about collecting solar energy in space for use on Earth. Although it’s been in development since the 70s, it’s only now that promising breakthroughs in technology have allowed it to emerge as a viable option for addressing the needs of growing global energy demand in a clean, constant and sustainable way. In this workshop, you can expect to learn more about the energy landscape, get a straightforward introduction to the technologies involved in space based solar power and work with your peers to build a working demonstration of wireless power transmission.

Design Thinking - What will future jobs look like?

Then join the experts at MBRSC for a journey through space and time and explore the story of a star’s formation, its life cycle and its ultimate fate. Through hands-on activities, you will learn how to distinguish between different stars, how to classify them and how these techniques are adapted on scientific instruments.

Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability are the enduring and interrelated forces that embody our dreams and challenges. They play a vital role in shaping the complex world of today and tomorrow and therefore form the three subthemes of Expo 2020. But what do these three words really mean and why should they matter to us? This is your chance to get to grips with the Expo 2020 subthemes, discuss and debate their relevance to youth, and help shape the way in which they are understood by young people across the UAE, by designing a toolkit to be used in schools.

(MOBILITY) Smart Cities: a smart idea?

From sensors on every street corner, to robot assisted services, Smart Cities are all integrating technology into our daily lives, making everything just that little bit easier, safer and more efficient. But cities are not measured by swipes or clicks, but by people’s happiness. Expo Legacy: Design the Sustainability Pavilion: the place of life

It’s our hope that the Expo 2020 Sustainability Pavilion will not only educate and entertain visitors but will also serve as an authentic demonstration building for sustainability. The pavilion is being created by the world leaders in eco-friendly design, Grimshaw Architects, and is being built from the ground up with sustainability as the guiding principle. Our ambition is that it will live on as visitor attraction long after the Expo gates close and continue to inspire a better world for generations to come. During this workshop, we will provide an update on the pavilion development process, present the latest pavilion concept and design outlines, and then give you the floor to voice your ideas on how we can ensure that the content is relevant and exciting for an unprecedented cross-section of global visitors. This is your chance to integrate your aspirations with our vision for this living landmark that will live on long after 2020.

Expo Masterplan: Magic places & special spaces

From the relaxing greenery of Dubai’s Zabeel Park, to London’s bustling Oxford Street, each city has its special place, but what we often don’t realise, is that in most cases, these don’t just happen by accident. So what is it that makes places special, and what tools are used by designers to create the places where magic can happen? Mixing all the right ingredients together does not guarantee a perfect result of course; in the end it is often how people choose to use a place that ensures its success or failure. In this workshop, we want you to share your ideas on how the Expo 2020 site can become your special place, not only during the expo itself, but also in the years that follow.

Expo Culture: Can you design the ultimate celebration?

Every year on 2nd December, people from across the UAE come together to celebrate the spirit of the union. 2nd December 2020 will be no different, except this time we have the opportunity to invite the world to celebrate with us and this is your chance to tell us how. In this workshop we are calling on you to propose a spectacular festival that will help us mark UAE National Day at the Expo. If you are passionate about our country’s culture and heritage, and love to plan parties as much as you love to attend them, this is the workshop for you.

We all love exploring new places and they say travel broadens the mind, but what if the journey was as exciting and interesting as the destination? In this workshop we want you to get creative and design the ultimate travel tool or accessory to be used on a flight, on your trip to the airport or while you are waiting to board. It could be enhancing something that already exists or coming up with a brand new, innovative idea. This is your opportunity to imagine your ideal travel companion.

Expo Energy: Energy, A Critical Enabler

15:15 to 16:15

Imagine a world with no light, heating, clean water, electricity or telecommunication services. Across the world, energy is critical to progress and prosperity. In this workshop, you will explore the role that energy plays in our daily lives and consider how the ever changing way in which we both supply and consume it impacts on our collective future. You will then break out into groups to build your ideal model for energy supply sources that meet current demand, and make demand side choices that could reduce our reliance on energy. You will see that there are many balanced decisions that need to be made, both on an individual and society level.

Robotics: Scrapyard Challenge (NYUAD)

In this hands-on workshop you will work as part of a team to compete against your friends and build simple electronic projects out of everyday junk, from outdated gadgets, to broken furniture and last season’s clothing. It’s time to get resourceful, and see how you can do more, with less.

Space: We're going to Mars, who's with us?

From the first planning stages to the actual blast off can take space agencies as much as ten years, but you only have 2 hours so you will need to work fast! In this workshop you will hear from the experts responsible for the UAE’s Mission to Mars, and then compete against your peers to design your very own space mission, taking into consideration ever changing factors such as budget, mass and power constraints, as well as the overall mission goal. Who can achieve the biggest scientific return within the specified budget?

(SUSTAINABILITY) Life lessons from the Red Planet

Why venture into space, when there’s still so much left to explore on our own planet? How can what we observe on Mars inform the way we live on Earth? Science or engineering? Hear from two experts – one leading the UAE’s Mission to Mars, and the other encouraging us to rethink the way we live on Earth – as they try to answer these questions and also help you consider the exciting and varied career options that STEM subjects can lead to.

Expo Legacy Design the Mobility Pavilion: the place of movement

Foster + Partners, the innovative design and architectural firm behind Masdar City has been tasked with creating Expo 2020’s Mobility Pavilion - a lively, dynamic space with demonstration areas for the latest inventions in Mobility related technology. In this workshop, we not only need you to validate our thinking, but more importantly, we want you to give us your thoughts and ideas on how we can develop a truly memorable experience for both visitors and participants. We also want your insights on the pavilion’s post-Expo use, as a logistics institute which will support the growth of Dubai as a leading transport and logistics hub. This is an invaluable opportunity to make your mark on the Expo and the legacy it leaves behind for future generations.
